Relief for India as Vijay has a long bat

Last Updated 18 August 2015, 19:42 IST

The Indian cricket team sweated it out under the sweltering sun at P Sara Oval on Tuesday with opener Murali Vijay having a long hit for the first time on this tour of Sri Lanka.

The in-form Vijay, who missed the opening Test due to a right hamstring injury, batted without showing too many signs of pain in what should be an encouraging news for the team that has already lost the other opener Shikhar Dhawan, thanks to a hairline fracture he suffered during the Galle game.

All the batsmen spent decent time at the nets with team director Ravi Shastri keeping a close eye on the proceedings. The batsmen, who were called aside and given a long talk by Shastri before the training session could start, batted in pairs at the nets. The batsmen kept alternating after every few balls and also practiced running between the wickets.

The only dampener was heavy rain that lashed the stadium for a brief while, although it came towards the end of their session.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Stuart Binny trained with the team after checking in
the previous night. The 31-year-old, called in as an extra member, only did some bowling.
The second Test starts on Thursday.
