Tension prevailed in and around Chigarenahalli village in Doddaballapur taluk on Thursday after a major fire broke out at a garbage-processing unit to which garbage generated in the City is sent by the BBMP.

Six fire tenders were rushed to douse the fire. The blaze is yet to come under control. According to sources, thick smoke was spotted around 3 pm at MSGP, a garbage-processing unit of the BBMP, followed by flames. The smoke expanded up to six kilometres creating tension among the villagers. Villagers from Gundlahalli, Sakkaregollahalli, Khalipalya and Aggegowdanapalya ru-shed to the spot and expressed anger over the incident, added the sources. They alleged that somebody lit fire to a heap of garbage deliberately so that the villagers would vacate their houses and other properties. Some of them demanded that the operations of the unit be stopped immediately.

Doctors at the local primary health centre were directed to be ready to handle any eventuality, added the police.
