In the backdrop of biennial Paryaya festival in Udupi, a Rs 10-crore proposal will be submitted to chief minister through Urban Development department for improving basic facilities including widening of roads in the city, said District incharge and Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake.

Chairing a meeting on Monday, he said that in the backdrop of State reeling under drought-like situation, it would not be good to seek more funds. The urban local bodies should become self sufficient, he said and asked them to emulate and implement Belagavi model to mobilise resources.

He said that all the roads should have footpaths in Udupi. “If government land is encroached, then  authorities concerned should initiate measures to reclaim the encroached land. With the help of Transfer of Development Rights (TDR), the roads should be widened,” he said.

An engineer from Public Works Department said that line estimates had been prepared for the development of Bannanje, Brahmagiri, Ajjarakadur, Kinnimulki, Diana, Kalsanka, Badagupete, Rajangann, Thenkupete, Gundibailu, Ambagilu and Mission Compound areas.

The funds released under Nagarothana Yojane and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) should be utilised effectively. The ULBs should be developed to become self-reliant, the minister added.

The minister also discussed about the problems faced by SC/ST communities in the district. All efforts should be made to bring the poor to the mainstream of the society, he added.

Sorake directed officials to initiate measures to identify DC manna land and distribute it among the needy. The officials should get ready to hold janasamparka meeting from next month. The Janasamparka meetings should be held in all the taluks, he added.

Deputy Commissioner R Vishal said that with regard to housing schemes, a committee has been constituted under the presidentship of Zilla Panchayat CEO Kanagavalli. The housing facilities will be given to those poor who do not have house, on a priority basis.

The meeting also discussed on sand mining, setting up of regional science centre and government tool room and training centre in Udupi.
