Metro worker killed as crane hits him

A 22-year-old labourer was killed after the lifter of the crane hit his head at the Namma Metro’s underground stretch on South Ramp in Central police limits on Wednesday.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Dilip Manjhi, a native of Jharkhand. The accident occured at 5 am.

 The crane driver and operator Satvir Singh did not notice Manjhi standing near the crane and moved the lifter which struck Manjhi's head, who collapsed on the ground and died on the spot.

The workers on the site informed the senior officials, who alerted the police. The police arrived at the spot and shifted the body for post-mortem. Manjhi was staying in a shed in Talaghattapura, said the police.

A senior police officer said that a case of negligence has been registered in Central police station against Singh and the supervisors of a private company Rajarajan and Pushparaj.

The body of the victim is being flown to his native place in Jharkhand. The contractor has already released all the payments of the victim and is submitting its report to the police, said a Metro official.
