Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a new manufacturing facility of Navaratna Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited here, Anthony said that the IAF already has two squadrons and the Defence Acquisition Council has decided on Monday to induct six more squadrons.
The additional order has been valued at Rs 5,500 crore and would comprise 125 medium range surface to air missiles in each squadron. He said, the IAF is happy on the performance of the two squadrons in its use.
“Like the Tejas, the Akash too has become a reality. All doubts about their performance and reports suggesting the projects be abandoned are now laid to rest” Antony said.
New facilities
He inaugurated manufacturing facility includes a Digital Flight Control Computer (DFCC) for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. Antony also handed over advanced naval gunfire control system developed by BEL for the Navy on the occasion.
He also said that at present 70 per cent of defence procurement is being imported due to non-availability of advanced technologies.
“Increasing the capabilities of our R&D and modernisation can reduce dependence. Too much of dependence on foreign suppliers could hurt during times of crisis” the Defence minister said.
