A Delhi court on Tuesday convicted a Uber cab driver for raping a 25-year-old woman executive in his taxi and endangering her life on December 5.

Shiv Kumar Yadav (32), who was brought to court from jail, appeared stunned as the judge read out the verdict.

The court said the detailed judgment would be made available on October 23 after pronouncement of sentence. It had reserved the verdict on October 7.

The convict could get life imprisonment. According to the prosecution, the incident took place on the night of December 5 when the victim, a finance executive working in Gurgaon, was heading back home in Inderlok in north-west Delhi.

The prosecution told the court Yadav slapped her several times and tried to throttled her. According to a doctor, the scratch marks on the victim’s neck were suggestive of an attempt to strangulate her.

While the victim’s father expressed satisfaction that justice had been done, the driver’s wife broke down outside the courtroom and said her family has been ruined.
“We are from a poor background and those who have resources succeed and God is watching everything,” she said, while complaining that she was not allowed to talk to her husband even for a minute.

His family, including wife and parents, were present in the courtroom but did could not talk to him as he was immediately taken back to the lock up. The offence of endangering woman’s life while raping her entails a minimum of 10 years rigorous imprisonment and a maximum of life term.

While the prosecution had produced 28 witnesses in the case, the driver had not examined anyone in his defence.
