A 24-year-old woman allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her in-laws’ house in outer Delhi’s Rohini on Saturday.

She apparently left behind a suicide note in which she mentioned domestic violence as a reason behind the extreme step. On Saturday evening, her family members held a protest outside Rohini North police station.

Anita had married last year and was staying with her husband’s family in Rohinisector 8. Her husband Mahesh is employed with a private company in Rajouri Garden.

Mother-in-law calls cops

Police said Anita’s mother-in-law made a call to the police control room at 3 pm.“She informed that Anita was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room. It is claimed that Anita had locked her room from inside,” said a police officer.

Anita was rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Since she died within seven years of her marriage, an SDM enquiry has also been initiated.

The statements of her family members and of her in-laws were recorded and an investigation is underway, police said.

Continuously harassed

According to the investigating officers, the woman’s parents in their statement have said there was no dowry demand as such, but she was continuously mentally harassed by her mother-in-law.

Police also said a suicide note apparently written by Anita was recovered from her room. Anita’s body has been preserved for a post-mortem, which will be conducted on Monday.
A team from Rohini North police station is investigating the matter. Anita’s family members held a protest at the police station demanding the arrest of her mother-in-law.
