Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Paris on November 30 at the UN Climate Change summit that seeks to come out with a new global emission cut treaty.

Besides Modi, close to 80 heads of state, US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping will be among the top leaders to attend the inaugural session of the conference that concludes on December 11.

“80 Heads of state and government present for #COP21 opening, incl US, China Prez & PM Modi to give final impetus to negotiation, said @LaurentFabius,” tweeted French Ambassador to India Francois Richier, quoting French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

This will be the first time in the history of climate change negotiations when heads of states and governments will attend the inaugural session of the climate change conference. This has been done apparently to avoid a Copenhagen summit-like situation when the top leaders, who were present at the concluding session, failed to arrive at a consensus.

The aim of the Paris summit is to come out with an emission reduction treaty that would restrict the global temperature rise.
