Very soon LED bulbs will replace CFL and incandescent lights in every home in the State. Representatives of the respective escoms will go from door to door to replace the bulbs.

To begin with, the State government is looking at distributing six crore bulbs, about 10 for every house at a subsidised rate of Rs 100 (market price is around Rs 400).

All urban and rural areas are expected to be covered under the initiative. This initiative - under the ‘Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme’ (DELP) - will be officially rolled out in December.

The programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in Mysuru on December 11, said Energy Minister D K Shivakumar.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Monday, the minister said this initiative would conserve electricity and also help in reducing the power bills for the consumers.

“Representatives of escoms will come to your doorstep and provide the bulbs. Ar-ound 300 MW of electricity can be saved through this,” he added. Either the consumers can buy it by paying Rs 100 per bulb or they can opt for an easy monthly instalment of Rs 10.

For the initial phase, Wipro will supply around 12 lakh bulbs, according to the minister. The opportunity to supply the bulbs is open to everyone and 20 per cent of it will be reserved for manufacturers from the State.

Bescom officials told Deccan Herald that while 10 was the target number, the number of bulbs distributed would depend on the need and the power supplied to that particular area.
Actors Ramya and Puneeth Rajkumar have been selected as the brand ambassadors for the programme. “In the wake of global warming, we have to start thinking about conserving electricity. I am very happy to be part of this initiative,” said Ramya.
