The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Thursday as sitting member Khekiho Zhimomi of the Nagaland People’s Front passed away here in the National Capital.

Zhimomi, Nagaland’s lone Rajya Sabha MP, was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences three days ago and breathed his last in the morning after suffering a stroke.

An active social worker who strived for uplift of weaker and backward sections of the society, Zhimomi had recently visited Myanmar with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval for the signing of a peace pact between several insurgent groups and the Myanmar government.

He represented Nagaland in the Upper House for two terms – from July 2008 to April 2010 and from April 2010 till date. When the House met on the opening day of the winter session, Chairman Hamid Ansari mentioned the passing away of 69-year-old Zhimomi.

“In the passing away of Shri Khekiho Zhimomi, the country has lost a distinguished parliamentarian, an able administrator and a dedicated social worker,” he said. The House also paid its respects to the memory of former members — Ram Kapse, Rudra Pratap Singh and N Rajendran —who died recently. Zhimomi has played a prominent role in central government’s peace initiative with Naga insurgent groups.
