Calendar of events announced for MLC polls

Deputy Commissioner C Shikha, on Saturday, announced the calendar of events for the election to Legislative Council from Mysuru-Chamarajanagar local bodies constituency, scheduled to be held on December 27.

The moral code of conduct, effective from November 24, will be in effect till January 1, 2016, said Shikha, who is also the presiding officer for the election process.

Addressing press persons, at her office, the she said, aspiring candidates can file their nominations with the Deputy Commissioner or Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) at their respective offices between December 2 and 9, except on public holidays, and the process will come to an end on January 1, 2016.

The elected members of various local bodies — Gram Panchayat, Taluk Panchayat, Town Panchayats, Zilla Panchayat, Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) members, MLAs and MPs — have votes. Of 7,628 voters, Mysuru district has 5,212 and Chamarajanagar district has 2,416 voters. While Mysuru taluk has the highest number of voters,1,109, Yalandur taluk in Chamarajanagar has the least, 216.

The authorities will set up a total number of 410 polling booths—275 in Mysuru district and 135 in Chamarajanagar district.

Teams formed
The model code of conduct will be effective in the constituency from November 24 and will continue till January 1, 2016.

A team, comprising Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mysuru and Hunsur sub-division assistant commissioners, has been formed to check violations in the model code of conduct at the district-level. A team comprising, Tahsildars, Executive Officers, Police Sub-Inspectors and Panchayat Development Officers will take care of taluks and villages.

A team including, MCC Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) along with Zonal Commissioners and Police Inspectors of respective police stations in the city, has been formed for the city to check violations, informed the DC.

Shikha warned stringent action against the officials, involved in the election duty, if they are found violating electoral norms. No officer should meet politicians and should not approve any new development works in the constituency. But, ongoing works can be taken up for further progress like payment, she said.

The DC said, as per the election commission guidelines, no politician, including chief minister, are supposed to organise functions to attract voters and also shall not participate in any public function, when the election moral code of conduct is in force.

As there is no fixed limit to spend on election campaign by the candidates, an Expenditure Monitoring Cell has not been established to check the expenditure, she said.

Shikha appealed to the public to inform the authorities if they come across any violation, either by officials or politicians. A helpline will be launched soon to check violations, she said.

Candidates photo
Interestingly, this election, no candidates will be provided with any symbol. Instead, photos of the candidates will be printed on the ballot papers.
