An attempt to rob ornaments from a house in Malleswaram by three unidentified men was thwarted with the timely arrival of the houseowner on Sunday afternoon.

According to the police, the incident took place at the house owned by Sampath, a businessman on 6th Cross in  Malleswaram.

Sampath went out of the house on Sunday morning on some work, while Mahesh, their domestic help, told Nagalakshmi, wife of Sampath, that he had some work and left home around 2 pm, said the police.

“Three unidentified men managed to sneak into the house around 2.30 pm, when Nagalakshmi was alone in the kitchen. They locked the house from inside and told her that Mahesh had met with an accident. However, Nagalakshmi grew suspicious and went into a room to make a phone call since the trio were strangers,” the police stated.

The three later followed her into the room and tied her hands and legs and put ‘pepper spray’ into her eyes, threatening her with a knife. They asked her to show the place where they had kept the ornaments. One of them even opened the cupboard to collect the ornaments, but ran out of luck as Sampath returned home and knocked the door, said the police.

The suspects kept silent for a while as Sampath repeatedly knocked on the door. They later somehow managed to escape. The patrolling cops, on being alerted, chased one of them till the Malleswaram railway station, but in vain, they added. The police have suspected Mahesh’s involvement in the crime and are questioning him.
