Vyapam scam mars Shivraj's 10-year glory

Vyapam scam mars Shivraj's 10-year glory

The back-to-back mysterious deaths of Vyapam accused and killing of 79 people after a stack of gelatine sticks used for mining, illegally stored inside a shop, exploded in September this year, devastated plan of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to celebrate the completion of his 10-year-term in office.

On November 29, the day Shivraj Singh Chouhan completed 10 years in office, the only non-Congress CM to have achieved that feat after Digvijaya Singh in Madhya Pradesh, spent much his day at his official bungalow.

The state BJP has coined a slogan – “ Dus saal, bemisaal” (10 years of exceptional rule) – to mark the occasion and planned to organize a national-level training camp for all BJP MLAs from across the country. The 10-year-long journey of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and celebration was cut short after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah decided to skip  the meet in the state capital.

In the last 10 years, the BJP under his leadership has succeeded in almost routing out the Congress from three levels of electoral politics in MP. The negative media coverage of Vyapam scam was enough to trouble Chouhan who was once talked about as a prime ministerial candidate.

The national spotlight on Chouhan and his government is not yet over. Rising number of farmer deaths is mounting public outrage against his government.

On every occasion, the opposition stepped up to attack him and his government alleging Shivraj is unable to provide succour to farmers and people.

He is staring at the worst political and leadership crisis of his nearly three-decade old career. Another important person who got a severe beating with the exposure of Vyapam scam is Governor Ram Naresh Yadav.

The Madhya Pradesh Special Task Force (STF), the investigating agency in the multi crore Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) or VYAPAM exam scam, filed an FIR against 88- year old Governor under section 420 and other relevant sections of the IPC as well as the prevention of corruption Act for his alleged role in the recruitment of forest guards by unfair means. The agency has already booked Shailesh Yadav, his son in the Vyapam exam scam.

The state also witnessed shooting down of Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) K C Malik, Tikamgarh district by a town inspector, and the merciless killing of a 40-year-old constable in Morena district by mining mafia.

The other shocking shooting incident was reported from Bhind district in May when footages of a shooting incident inside the maternity ward of district hospital between three friends was aired by news channels. The month of August began with a very bad news when at least 30 passengers were killed in twin train derailments in Harda district.

After the successful return  of deaf and dumb girl Geeta from Pakistan to India in October,  story of Ramzaan, a Pakistani boy who crossed two international borders and reached Bhopal  in November got a wide publicity with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj promising to send Ramzaan to his mother.

In November, an interesting event that drew national attention was  guarding of foolproof strong room where the EVMs are being kept by Congress supporters of three districts of the Ratlam parliamentary seat. The matter endured a biting controversy in the middle, but it ended with the victory of the Congress candidate.

In the current month, the state also witnessed tennis star Sania Mirza denying Madhya Pradesh sports minister Yashodhara Raje scindia’s allegation that she had demanded a hefty fee to attend a sports event in Bhopal.

However, the future of Chouhan looks unchallenging, ahead of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, world's largest religious bathing ceremony in the year 2016 spanning from 22nd of April to 21st of May at Ujjain.
