An 18-year-old boy was thrashed to death with rods and sticks over a bottle of liquor in northwest Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar on Sunday. Two men were arrested and a juvenile apprehended within hours of the murder, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Sanjeet, a motorcycle mechanic living in Adarsh Nagar’s Kaushalpuri.

According to police, Sanjeet was drinking with two of his friends when they fell short of alcohol.

“While they were planning to purchase more liquor, Sanjeet walked away from the group to relieve himself,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Vijay Singh. Sanjeet saw accused Karan, Raju and the juvenile consuming alcohol seated around a fire.

Having noticed the liquor bottle, Sanjeet approached them and requested them to lend him the alcohol.

The accused refused and that led to an argument that turned into a scuffle.
The scuffle resulted in the fire getting extinguished and the liquor bottle, worth Rs 30, breaking.

In a fit of rage, the accused thrashed Sanjeet.

“The accused first rained fist blows and kicks on the victim and then went on to beat him with sticks lying nearby,” Singh added.

Hearing his cries for help, Sanjeet’s friends rushed to his help, prompting the assailants to flee.

Sanjeet was rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

A call was made to the police control room. Having registered a murder case based on the statement of Sanjeet’s friends, police launched a manhunt.

“The description of the assailants provided by Sanjeet’s friends helped us nab the suspects with hours,” Singh said.

The accused were known to Sanjeet.

While Karan is unemployed, Raju is a rickshaw-puller. The juvenile worked as a part-time car mechanic.

“Sanjeet’s family lives in Uttar Pradesh. They have been informed and the post-mortem will be conducted after they arrive in the capital,” Singh added.
