When less is beautiful

Trend alert
Last Updated 07 January 2016, 18:46 IST

From big bold eyeliners to dark lips and from clean hairdos to neat braids, 2016 is about biding adieu to garish makeup and opting for less is more. Aakriti Kochar, beauty and makeup expert, Oriflame India, shares makeup and hair trends for 2016 with Metrolife.

Subtle smoky eyes:

Smoky eyes really go well with a dramatic evening wear. But this year they are subtle, defined and less messy. To get that restrained look use your black, brown or grey eye kohl on the top lid and smudge it with shades of brown or grey eye shadows, restrict it to a thin smudged line on the lower rim. Lots of mascara and bushy eye brows will give it a needed definition. Always use matte shadows for definition and some shimmer at the end to highlight as per preference of shade.

Go strobing: If you are looking for a less intense way to highlight your face than strobing is perfect for you. It focuses exclusively on highlighter, applied where light would naturally hit your face. Those who don’t prefer dark shadows while contouring can instead opt for highlighting their best features.

Clean hairdos: Cocktail buns and pony tails are a hit for the evening. They are not only easy to manage but give a contemporary look as well.

Jumbo combo: Choose any hairstyle from the British era and compliment it with a statement accessory piece. This way you are going to be the classical diva!

Rich tones: Dark lips are here to stay this season. So, the colours like berry, plum and very deep red in matte finish will grace your pout. These rich warm shades one can use this winter depending on your skin tone.

Big on lines: From bold eye liners to extended variations and from graphic eye liners to strokes – these are some of the ways that would let the eyes do all the talking. Eye liners will be used in dramatic ways this year. If you have big round or almond-shaped eyes, sport dramatic eye liners with your Indian wear with soft cheeks and lips.

Neat braids: Step away from the loose, bohemian messy braids to neater, cleaner braids this season. Another trend that is popular on international runway is low pigtails. Remember pigtails from school days? These are creating a ruffle on the ramp and are expected to be an upcoming trend. Tie them low and close together, embellish
with a statement hair piece and team it up with an evening dress, gown or jumpsuit.

Faux bob: This is the biggest red carpet trend this season. From Kangna Ranaut to Kim Kardashian, faux bob is the best bet if one doesn’t want to chop hair like Sonakshi Sinha. Tie your hair with a hair tie or ribbon into a loose ponytail, roll up this ponytail and tuck it inside to make a bob. Secure it with bobby pins on the scalp, use a delicate accessory or hair band to complete this look.
