Q I am 20 years old.  I have a lot of open pores on my cheeks and nose, which turn red when exposed to the sun. What could be the cause and what are some simple remedies that I could try?

A Acne develops when skin pores get blocked, resulting in the trapping of oil within the  pores. There is really no permanent remedy for open pores. Any vegetable or fruit that has an astringent quality will help smoothen uneven skin texture and reduce pores. Add a few drops of lime juice to tomato juice, apply on open pores for 20 minutes and wash off with cold water. The juice or pulp of pineapple/ peach/ papaya is a very good home remedy for skin eruptions. Always wash your face with cold water. In humid weather, wash your face 2-3 times a day.  Dry and powder orange peel and use this as a scrub in place of soap.

Q I’m 12 years old. I have pimples all over my face. Could you please suggest some remedies?

APimples or acne is a common skin condition among adolescents. The cause is usually an increase in male sex hormones, which individuals of both genders accrue during puberty.  It is more common among women than in men during adulthood. Do not pick or squeeze your pimples.  As tempting as it may be, do not squeeze, scratch, rub or touch your pimples. Drink 8 - 10 glasses of water  a day.  Drinking water is essential for clear skin and your overall health. Follow a balanced diet and go easy on make-up. Cleanse and moisturise your face every night. Ensure that your meals have enough fresh fruit and vegetables. Don’t fret about the pimples. They invariably go away following a good skin care regimen.
