Leopard rescued from well near Kaup

Last Updated 13 January 2016, 18:24 IST

A leopard that fell into a well at Kuthyar Karmar Jiddu near Kaup was rescued by the Forest Department officials and local residents on Wednesday.

The well belonged to Girija Moolya. Assuming that a small animal had fallen into the well, Moolya lowered a basket using a rope on Tuesday afternoon. As the rope was lowered, however, it was pulled in by the animal. When people who had gathered near the well peeped in, they saw a leopard inside and informed the Forest Department officials.

Struggle

The officials from Shirva, Belman and Udupi, who visited the spot on Tuesday afternoon, could not rescue the leopard. They, however, later lowered a cage with a hen in it. As there was little water in the well, the leopard was resting in a small, tunnel-like space inside the well. On Wednesday morning, when the hungry leopard entered the cage to consume the hen, the door of the cage was closed and leopard was rescued.
The animal was later released into the forest.
