Four modern bus stations on cards

Last Updated 29 May 2009, 20:27 IST

The corporation concluded pre-bid meetings to begin four massive infrastructure projects, which would include construction of fancy, futururistic bus stations and commercial complexes at Puttur, Mangalore, Hassan and Chitradurga.

The projects, that would cost an estimated Rs 164 crore, would not just give a facelift to the existing dilapidated structures that passengers have to contend with, they would alleviate neglect and daily frustrations.

Sources said that the existing bus terminals at the four locations graffiti covers nearly every visible surface, people relieve themselves in the open, the buildings are in poor condition and delays are an everyday occurence. All of this was the result of neglect that was politely called deferred maintenance. This is expected to change in the months to come.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, KSRTC managing director Gaurav Gupta said: “These projects will be implemented/developed through public-private-participation (PPP). Karnataka State Industrial Investment and Development Corporation (KSIIDC) and IL&FS Project Development Company Limited, Bangalore are the advisors for these projects. Bidding for these projects would be concluded by June-end and the is expected to begin in earnest by August 2009.”

Once completed, the KSRTC hopes to change the concept of bus terminals in the State and pave the way for new generation bus transport infrastructure. The four projects would include modern state-of-the-art bus stations and commercial complex, housing retail outlets, multiplex theatres and restaurants on the existing site. Besides, they are expected to enhance KSRTC’s revenue generation capacity.

The four bus stations would be reliable, safe and uncrowded. Buses originating from these stations would be fast and frequent. The stations themselves would have electronic sign boards that flash arrival and departure timings. They would be buildings that would attract rather than repel commuters, tourists and business travellers.

Satellite stations

The corporation would also begin construction of satellite bus stations at Peenya and Old Madras Road in the City later this year. Land for construction of these stations have already been acquired.

They will be constructed on the lines of the satellite bus station on Mysore Road.
