With Kashmir witnessing snowfall and heavy rain since Wednesday night, the minimum temperature at most places in the Valley has decreased even as the MeT Department has predicted continuation of adverse weather conditions till February 13.

The snowfall and rain have led to cancellation of flights and closure of Srinagar-Jammu national highway on Thursday. Snowfall in upper reaches of Kashmir started on Wednesday night while Srinagar witnessed intermittent snowfall since Thursday morning.

Due to rain and snow normal life in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir remained disrupted. A MeT Department official said fresh snowfall was also recorded in ski resort Gulmarg where 20 cm of snow had accumulated during the night while Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir recorded eight cm of fresh snow.

He said many areas on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway like Jawahar Tunnel and Banihal also received moderate to heavy snowfall.

Due to heavy snowfall the Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only surface link between Kashmir and rest of the country, was closed for traffic as a precautionary measure, a traffic police official said.
“The highway is closed due to snowfall at Jawahir tunnel and other areas en route. It is snowing,” he said.

MeT official said the minimum temperature in Gulmarg settled at minus 4.5 degree Celsius, while the mercury in Pahalgam settled at a low of 0.3 degrees. Srinagar recorded a low of 1.3 degree Celsius, down from 2.5 degrees the previous night, he said and added Leh, the frontier town in Ladakh region, recorded a low of minus 4.2 degree Celsius against previous night’s minus 6.0 degrees.
