Metro worker held for Rs 1.6 lakh station theft

A 22-year-old housekeeper has been arrested for stealing Rs 1.60 lakh cash from a locker at the station control room at New Delhi Airport Metro station, the police said on Thursday.

Amit Kumar, a resident of Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, was nabbed with the help of CCTV footage. He was held after a complaint was filed by the station controller, Hukam Singh, on February 20.

Singh told police that he found out about the theft on February 18. “The cash was stolen from the station control room’s cash locker,” said police.

During the probe, the Metro station’s staff was interrogated and CCTV footage was checked. “Amit’s movement was found suspicious in the CCTV footage,” the officer added. Amit confessed to the theft during interrogation and the money was recovered from his house. He worked in the housekeeping department on contract basis for the last eight months.

“Amit used to closely watch the drill of keeping cash in locker and the process of taking over by station controller,” the officer said. He was waiting for an appropriate opportunity to steal the cash. No criminal history of Amit has been found.
