For the big, bold and beautiful

Out of the box

Designer Kiran Uttam Ghosh has come up with a collection which includes a range of designs for women who are sized 12-18. Titled ‘Big Beautiful Women’ (BBW), the collection includes a bespoke section for unusual sizes and aims to correct a mindset among the majority of these clients that make them buy ‘safe’, putting size before everything.

According to Ghosh, what made her foray into designing the collection was the size eight and size 10 that always remained on the racks of her remaining stock.

“We in the fashion industry have been busy promoting sylph-like forms, because they show our clothes off best. Six foot models that fit into size eight garments make everything look beautiful. But honestly, I don’t sell even five per cent of my eight size
ensembles, and that to the age group not over 30,” she tells Metrolife.

Alongside, it was also the fact that “no regard to fine details” in outfits for plus-size women, that compelled the designer to do the collection. “As per the market availability for plus-size clothing, I found the designs to be boring, predictable and often unflattering with no regard to fine details like the clever positioning of a dart or drape which can
actually take an outfit and the woman wearing it from ordinary to oomphy despite her larger size,” she tells Metrolife.

The line features dresses, kurtas, jackets, kaftans and saris in unusual colour stories, says Ghosh.  The range will also be available in petite and regular sizes. “Every piece that is a part of this line exudes the same elegance and bravado that fashion aficionados look forward to from a Kiran Uttam Ghosh ensemble,” she says.

However, designing BBW wasn’t easy task for Ghosh. She says that the silhouettes, colours, fabrics, embroideries for the collection had to be thoroughly thought through and edited. “For instance, there are only a couple of shades of red that work for a larger woman,” she illustrates.

On being asked if there are any upcoming trends in plus-size fashion, the designer says that one must not be blinded by trends. According to her, it should be about creating “timeless beautiful clothes” and not about trends.
