Report on Wakf properties to be tabled in Council

Last Updated 03 March 2016, 20:09 IST

The State Cabinet, after an extensive discussion on Thursday, decided to table the Karnataka State Minorities Commission report on Wakf properties headed by Anwar Manippady, in the Legislative Council.

The report was submitted to the then BJP government in March, 2012. The report had found that politicians from the minority community, belonging to all major parties, had usurped around 57,000 acres of Wakf land in the State.

The Cabinet, however, did not specify when the report would be tabled and left the decision to the chief minister, sources said.

Council Chairman D H Shankaramurthy had directed the government to table the report following a privilege motion by the BJP members against Wakf Minister Qamarul Islam. The Cabinet felt there was no point dilly-dallying on tabling the report. Not tabling the report could attract the breach of privilege, sources said.

Law minister’s assurance
Law Minister T B Jayachandra on Thursday assured the Legislative Council that the Manippady report would be placed before the House soon.

Replying to the demand aired by BJP’s G Madhusudhan to place the report in the Council, Jayachandra said the report would be placed soon. The BJP and JD(S) members demanded that the date should be specified. Council Chairman Shankaramurthy said the minister has said that it would be placed either on Thursday or Friday. He also directed the minister to specify the date. Jayachandra dodged the question by saying, “I will explain it to the chairman in his chamber.”
