Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongman B S Yeddyurappa, even before settling down as the party’s new state president, has declared that his one-point agenda is to bring the party back to power in the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections.

He set himself a target of winning a minimum of 150 seats, way above the winning mark of 113.

The Lingayat leader, addressing party workers and state leaders at the party office in Malleswaram on Friday, exuded confidence that he would drive the Congress out of power in the state.

This is the fourth time he is becoming state president. He is scheduled to formally assume office at 11 am on April 14 at Malleswaram grounds.

He was flanked by Union Ministers Ananth Kumar and D V Sadananda Gowda when he arrived in Bengaluru from Delhi after he was declared the new president. Both these leaders were not seeing eye to eye with Yeddyurappa earlier.

Though the party has not projected him as chief ministerial candidate,  the impression given by the state leaders was to that effect.

The party office was brimming with thousands of workers, who welcomed Yeddyurappa by garlanding him and bursting crackers. On Saturday, his residence was deluged with visitors, who wanted to shake hands with the new president or merely mark their presence.

Yeddyurappa, while branding the Siddaramaiah government non-performing, said he would not relax until the Congress is thrown out. He said he would work towards fulfilling the wishes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP National President Amit Shah to bring the party back to power in Karnataka.
