Two I-T officials among 3 held for demanding bribe

The CBI on Thursday arrested two officials from the Income Tax Department and a another person for demanding and accepting bribe. The accused are Abhishek Tripathy, an official in Vijayapura, Alok Tiwari, posted at Vijayapura and his driver Sunil Jadhav.

Police said the complainant had approached Tripathy in connection with tax issue at his office in Belagavi. Tripathy demanded a bribe of Rs 4 lakh for dropping prosecution proceedings initiated by the department.

The demand was scaled down to Rs 2.5 lakh and Tripathy directed the complainant to pay the amount to another Income Tax Officer Tiwari, posted at Vijayapura. Not willing to pay the bribe, the complainant lodged a complaint and the CBI officials laid a trap. However, Tiwari directed the complainant to hand over the bribe amount to his driver Jadhav.

CBI officials caught the driver red-handed while accepting the bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh from the complainant at Vijayapura. Later, CBI sleuths also arrested both the Income Tax officers.

The CBI officials also searched five premises in Belagavi and Vijayapura and seized details of bank deposits, counter-foils, RTGS remittances, insurance policies and a bank locker.

The accused were produced before the CBI court  in Dharwad on Thursday. The court remanded the accused to judicial custody. A case has been registered under IPC section 120 (b) and sections 13 (2) of Prevention of Corruption Act.
