Students protest against errors in MU exam results

The postgraduate (PG) students of Mangalore University staged a protest against the errors in the results of the examinations held for some courses and delay in the announcement of the results of third semester of some PG courses by boycotting the classes on Friday.

The students, who sat outside the science faculty building on the university campus, said the university had conducted the examinations for first and third semester courses in December.

 However, the results of some courses have not been announced till now. The students will have to appear for the second and fourth (final) semester examinations by the end of May, they said.

They said the students are under pressure due to lack of clarity on conducting supplementary examination and apply for re-evaluation of papers. The results should have been announced within a month of conducting the examinations, they claimed.

The protesting students demanded, “Though results of some PG courses were announced, there was no clarity and the results of some candidates were mentioned as “to be announced later” (TAL). The university should explain about this delay.”

A student, who had appeared for Commerce exam, which was a paper under Choice Based Credit System, got the result of Computer Science subject. “The university should answer how such a gross mistake could happen. The answer sheets did not have bar codes. Earlier, there were bar codes for all the answer scripts. However, it was missing this year. Without the bar code, how will one identify?” the student asked. 

The protesters said that there were mistakes in the results announced. They also pointed out that there was a delay and discrepancy in undergraduate course results. The university authorities had agreed to fix the software, but the same problem has been repeated in postgraduate course results as well, they said.

Registrar (Evaluation) Prof A M Khan, who visited the protesting students, promised them that the results will be announced by May 16. But the students continued to boycott the classes and took out a march to the administrative building and waited for vice chancellor to arrive till evening.

Later when Vice Chancellor K Byrappa stepped out of the administrative building, the students waylaid him and demanded answer to the confusion in the results. Prof Byrappa, in turn, told them that all confusions will be set right by May 16.

 ‘Don’t panic’

In a separate press release, Prof Khan appealed to the students not to panic about the results of odd semester examinations.

“There has been a delay in the announcement of results due to the process of transition. Due care has been taken while announcing the results since we did not want confusion as it happened in UG results. The delay has caused panic among students, but there are no errors in the results announced. A meeting of the chairpersons of PG departments was called and it was resolved to complete the third valuation process by May 16 and announce the results completely. Till date, 87.5% of the PG results have been announced (41 out of 44 first semester and 36 out of 44 third semester results) on the website. The remaining results will be announced soon,” he added in the press release.
