'People are more aware now'

The Kannada film industry is making a gradual but massive transformation in the kind of films that it is churning out and proof of this are all the plot-based scripts that are coming out.

To add to the growing list is ‘Karvva’, a horror thriller starring actor Tilak Shekar that released this week. Talking about how the script is the hero of a film, the ‘Ugramm’ actor says, “I prefer story-based films over hero-based ones. There is more awareness among the audience and they aren’t going to be content with a film that is tailor-made for a hero instead of the other way around.”

In the movie, Tilak plays a stylish, flamboyant and spoilt character who has no value for money. “His job is to spend the money his father makes.” On why he picked this role, he says, “Everyone should watch it and then they will understand. It took us 2 years to make ‘Karvva’ because we wanted to produce something that the audience won’t regret watching. Since its release, we’ve been getting great feedback.”

Since it lays more emphasis on the storyline than the actors, it took the team a year and a half just to correct the script. After that, they had to shoot and work on post-production. “We didn’t want the script to have any flaws,” says Tilak.

The Kannada film industry, like the others in India, is slowly making a transition to plot-heavy films. Although this growth has been a bit slow, it’s never too late.

Commenting on this, he says, “We can’t make the same old films and expect the audience to be satisfied. Because of the growth of the internet and social media, people are more aware now and can spot flaws in a story and making of a film. They also compare films between different language industries. We, as humans, have grown.” His advice to all viewers is to not miss even a single frame of the film as they might miss the plot.
