'I have never bothered about success'

Be it his National Award winning performance in Vicky Donor or lively on-stage antics in reality show Antakshari, Annu Kapoor has had a successful run in theatre, films, radio and television. The 61-year-old actor-anchor and radio presenter admits it’s his mother’s prudent words that drive him to work harder.

“She always used to say that success will follow when you are sincere and honest about your work. This is the reason why I have never bothered, thought or even imagined about success,” Kapoor tells Metrolife.

Kapoor’s association with music dates back to early ’90s when he first featured in
Antakshari, the 7 Khoon Maaf actor feels that he shares a strong bond with music, which is why he thoroughly enjoys hosting the show, Suhaana Safar with Annu Kapoor on 92.7BIG FM.

“Music stimulates me emotionally and personally. It will be difficult to define what music means to me,” he says.

Those who listen to the show will know how Kapoor digs out interesting anecdotes and trivia about yesteryears’ Bollywood films and actors, and plays soulful melodies.

According to him, all the research on these interesting nuggets is done by his company, Annu Kapoor Pvt Ltd and emphasis is laid on cross checking information.

“Such information is not available on the internet so my team is extremely careful when it comes to researching,” he says.

Kapoor, who has been in the industry for over three decades, says it is important for people to understand that a song is a musical composition with lyrics. “The importance of good lyrics can’t be ignored, but at the same time you will remember the tune of the song,” he says.

“Yes, there are many songs with vulgar lyrics, but it is only because people like listening to such songs,” he says. He adds that while musicians are trying their best to create quality music, “it is the listeners who have to be responsible and develop a taste for good music. The effectiveness and impact of good lyrics comes out well when it is supported by melodic tune,” he says.
