White stem borer worries coffee growers

Delay in monsoon spread the disease

White stem borer worries coffee growers

White stem borer has again started to spread rampantly and this has added to the problems of the growers as this has caused significant crop and capital loss. The disease has affected even the high yielding 15 years-old plants as well.

Coffee growers opine “the disease started spreading owing to the delay in monsoon. Though the medicines were sprayed in the first week of April and May, the disease could not be controlled.”

White stem borer disease is affecting Arabica coffee. Most of the farmers in Somwarpet taluk grow Arabica coffee. However, this year the growers were expecting good yield. Even there was a hike in the price of coffee. However, the hopes of the growers were dashed to the ground owing to white stem borer disease.

Every year coffee growers are facing one or the other problem.

Last year, the yield was less owing to the shortage of pre monsoon shower. Some growers had just got two to three bags of coffee from one acre land.

To control the disease, the coffee growers have started destroying the affected plants.
