The Congress MLA from Ramdurg in Belagavi district, Ashok Pattan, on Friday submitted his resignation to the local tahsildar to protest the ‘injustice’ meted out to the state following the rejection of the Karnataka’s interim plea by the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal.

Pattan, who is also the Government Chief Whip in the Assembly, submitted his resignation letter to the Ramdurg Tahsildar Tukaram Dasar. Pattan along with his supporters participated in a protest rally in Ramdurg and later submitted his resignation letter, addressed to the Legislative Assembly Speaker to the tahsildar. According to procedure, a MLA has to personally submit the letter to the Speaker citing reasons for resignation.

In his letter submitted to tahsildar, Pattan has stated that the verdict has hurt him and, in the interests of the voters and farmers of the Ramdurg constituency he is voluntarily resigning as MLA. Along with Pattan, the Congress members of Ramadurg Town Municipal Council, Ramadurg Taluk Panchayat and Belagavi Zilla Panchayat members from the taluk too submitted their resignation letters to the tahsildar.

Ramdurg taluk observed bandh for the second consecutive day on Friday condemning the interim verdict of the Tribunal. Schools, colleges, offices and business/trades remained closed. Public transport vehicles were off the road.

Meanwhile, life returned to normal in the Malaprabha riparian areas of Khanapur, Bailhongal and Saundatti. Schools, colleges and government/private offices functioned as usual.
