The South Indian sojourn

Authentic taste

For those who love indulging in a soft ‘idli’ or relishing some ‘bath’, the ‘Brahmins’ Thatte Idli’ at Malleswaram is the perfect place to be. Though the eatery doesn’t offer a seating space, it makes up with the South Indian specials on its menu.

The menu consists of ‘uddina vada’, ‘khara bath’, ‘kesari bath’ and ‘avalakki’ among other items. The eatery is run by two partners — Subhash Sharma and Ranjit Bijoor. “Our most demanded item will always be the signature  ‘thatte idli’. The customers always ask for it. Apart from that, people also enjoy the ‘pongal’ and ‘bisi bele bath’,” says Subhash.

He claims that the dishes are made in a certain way, which draws people from across the city. “We have a huge crowd that has been coming since our inception. Also, the crowd, though dominated by the South Indian community, includes people of different ages. It is a floating crowd,” says Rajesh.

Rajesh vouches that there are even North Indians who come by to try the authentic South Indian food items. “Most of them have heard of ‘idli’ and other foods. ‘Thatte Idli’ is something new to them.” Compared to other places, the ‘thatte idli’ is much softer here.

“Often at other places, the same batter is used to make ‘ídli’ and ‘thatte idli’. Thus the flavour remains the same, though the shape might be different. Though those are ‘thatte idli’ too, our ‘thatte idli’ is different. Ours melts in the mouth,” he says.

The eatery is jam-packed with people whenever it is open. “We also get orders. The customers get fresh and hygienic food on the spot. The ones who place orders also get the additional benefit of getting customised food according to their taste,” adds Rajesh.
The eatery is located at 8th Main, Malleswaram, between 17 and 18 cross.
