The Commercial Street police arrested three persons, including two women, who in the guise of customers, would make away with gold ornaments from jewellery showrooms.

According to the police, the arrested are Aliya Begum (67), her daughter Sabeeha Banu (50) and her grandson Imran Khan (20), all residents of Saraipalya near Manyata Tech Park in North Bengaluru. The police have recovered gold ornaments weighing 113 grams from the suspects. The prime accused, Musrath Banu, is absconding.

The women would visit jewellery showrooms wearing burqa. They would tell the staff that they had to purchase gold ornaments for a relative’s wedding. While the staff showed them the gold ornaments, the accused would divert their attention and slip the ornaments into their hand bags.

They would then tell the staff that they were not satisfied with the designs and leave the place. It is only at the time of returning the ornaments to the showcase that the employees would realise that the women had made away with the valuables, said the police.

During the investigation, the CCTV footage from the showrooms were examined. But the face of the women could not be seen as they were clad in burqas. However, one woman had a mole near her eye. The police checked the records for accused with similar modus operandi.

They found Sabeeha Banu who was previously arrested in similar cases. They picked her up for questioning and she confessed to committing the crime. Based on her information, Begum and Khan were also arrested.

With their arrest, two cases in Commercial Street and one in RT Nagar police stations have been solved, added the police.
