Rahul targets Modi over CJ ticking off govt

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Supreme Court Chief Justice T S Thakur’s warning to the government for the delay in appointment of judges and called it a   reality check for Modi.

“Reality check from Supreme Court for the PM: No Govt of Modi, by Modi, for Modi,” he said in a tweet.

Senior lawyer and former attorney general Soli Sorabjee also said on Saturday that Chief Justice Thakur’s criticism of the government was ‘genuine and not theatrical’.

“I think what moved him to say the strong words in court was his real feeling that the government is stalling the appointments,” he said.

“On account of non-appointment of judges, when the government does not accept recommendations for a long time, it leads to great delays,” Sorabjee said.

However, the former attorney general maintained, “I have known Union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Arun Jaitley. It is not the intention of the NDA government to pack the judiciary, but delays do take place.”

According to the CJI, 75 names had been recommended by the collegium for appointment as judges in the last eight months, after the Supreme Court quashed the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC).
