Madikeri town, which offers vistas of misty hills in winter, is devoid of basic facilities for those who dwell in Indira Nagar and Chamundeshwari Nagar layouts.

The two layouts are situated on an elevated area. Houses have been constructed by levelling the hillocks. The daily wage labourers dwell in these layouts. However, they lack basic facilities.

A visit to the Indira Nagar through a road from Rajaseat will unravel the pathetic condition of the region. As the houses have been constructed on a sloppy terrain, the solar lamps were installed. However, the lamps have become defunct and do not light during night. As a result, the residents find it difficult come out without streetlights.

Though a concrete road has been laid to Indira Nagar, the bikes and autos do not travel on the stretch during monsoon due to slippery road. No heavy vehicles travel on the stretch. If anyone falls sick, then they have to be carried to the main road. Even the ambulance do not reach the layout.

Apart from this, the rainy season gives some anxious moments to its residents. Bushes and weeds that abound in the layout have become the abode of snakes. As a result, the residents are scared to come out of the house during night. Even the garbage collection vehicles do not reach the layout regularly. As a result, the garbage is disposed unscientifically beside the roads.

During the year which receives heavy rainfall, there are untoward incidents in these two layouts such as caving in of hillocks. The residents are relieved as the region did not get heavy rainfall this year.

The situation of Chamun-deshwari Nagar layout is no different. With the growing Madikeri town, the greenery has been converted into layout. Though every year, the City Municipal Council directs the residents of these layouts to shift to plain region, the residents have failed to listen to the plea of the officials.
