A 21-year-old youth was bludgeoned to death with sticks and stones by around a dozen men when he tried to intervene in a fight between the group and his friend in West Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area.

Nine people have been detained in connection with the death, police said.

The victim identified as Sushant Lakra used to live with his mother and sister in Ranhola village. Lakra was the only earning member of his family, as his father had died five years ago in an accident.

According to sources, he was working in a private company.

Lakra’s family members told police that on Monday evening he got a call from one of his friends Chauhan following which he left for Shiv Vihar in his car.

Police further said that when Lakra reached Shiv Vihar he found his friend Chauhan getting beaten up by around a dozen men.

“When he tried to intervene in the fight to protect his friend, the group left Lakra’s friend behind and targeted Lakra and started beating him with sticks, stones and ice-picks,” said a police officer.

Lakra was thrashed by the group for several minutes, after which they left him bleeding at the place.

Lakra’s friend called up police and informed them about the incident following which police took Lakra to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where he died while being operated upon.

Police have started the investigation and on the basis of Lakra’s friend statement nine people have been detained for questioning.

According to the police, the accused are from the nearby area only and will be arrested soon.

Meanwhile, Lakra’s body has been sent for post-mortem after which it will be handed over to the family.
