UGC allows yoga on NET subject list

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday paved the way for recruitment of yoga faculty in universities and colleges as it approved its inclusion as a subject for candidates writing the National Eligibility Test (NET).

A decision to include yoga on the list of NET subjects was taken by the Commission at its meeting here.

A committee set up by the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s yoga coach H R Nagendra, had earlier in April recommended  inclusion of yoga in the list of subjects opted by NET candidates to make the ancient practice a “more attractive” career option for those learning it.

Yoga is currently taught at 52 institutions across the country. About 16 of them offer an MA degree in the discipline. The Centre has asked all the universities and other higher education institutions to consider teaching  yoga as a subject.

The NET is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education for determining the eligibility of candidates for the post of assistant professor in universities and colleges. The nation-wide test also determines eligibility for grant of junior research fellowships.
