Errors in your DL? Don't visit RTO, just apply online

Software to be operational by October-end; can help increase transparency

Soon, you need not make the rounds of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to rectify clerical errors in your driving licence. Errors in name and date of birth can be corrected with just a click or tap.

The facility will be initially available in Bengaluru and then extended across Karnataka. Presently, RTOs in Bengaluru offer Learner’s Licences (LLs) and Driving Licences (DLs) online on a pilot basis through the Sarathi-4 software.

The Sarathi-4 software allows applicants of LLs and DLs to manage the entire process online such as filing of application, paying the prescribed fee, uploading photographs, and even book slots for the driving skill test without visiting the RTO.

The Transport Department will also include other facilities in Sarathi-4, such as change of address, applying for duplicate driving licence, adding an additional class of vehicles, renewing licence and the driving licence extract, C Mallikarjun, Joint Commissioner for Transport (Environment and e-Governance), told DH. This could help to keep touts away as any computer-literate person can apply online.

The LL and the DL facility will be fully operational on Sarathi-4 by the end of October. Thereafter, the department will start adding other facilities in the software, he added. Another official said that the facilities would be made available by the end of September as the staff were already working on them.

In a few months, the facilities will be extended to all the 69 RTOs in the state, the official added.

Presently, it is an uphill task to get the work done in the RTOs if a person approaches an official directly. But it’s an easy task if one goes through an agent.

Officials in the Transport Department hope that corruption would come down as the online service is transparent.
