Last Updated 13 September 2016, 18:25 IST

Amid tension on Tuesday owing to the Cauvery issue, thousands of Muslims gathered and celebrated Bakrid at the Idgah Maidan in Tilak Nagar. However, the turnout was low, compared to that of the previous years.

People also celebrated the festival and offered prayers at various mosques in the city. They exchanged greetings in a traditional way.

Sir Khazi of Mysuru Mohammad Usman Sharief led the prayers at the Idgah Maidan and highlighted the significance of the festival. He said, “The festival is celebrated in memory of Prophet Ibrahim Khalilullah and his son Prophet Ismail Zabihullah for their sacrifices.”

The Khazi appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony on the Cauvery issue. He expressed displeasure over the violence that erupted in parts of the state over the issue.

Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Tanveer Sait offered prayers at Cutchi Memon Mosque on Ashoka Road. Prominent personalities took part in the festivities. City police had provided tight security as a precautionary measure.
