Eshwarappa to CM: Stop water release or resign

Last Updated 14 September 2016, 19:32 IST

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council K S Eshwarappa on Wednesday urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to either immediately stop Cauvery water release to Tamil Nadu or resign.

Speaking to reporters here,  the BJP leader said it is the duty of chief minister to safeguard the interests of the Cauvery basin districts. He urged Siddaramaiah to stop the release of water to Tamil Nadu immediately even if it amounts to contempt of court.

“We don’t mind going to jail along with the chief minister. But Siddaramaiah is not interested,” he stated. Eshwarappa said Tamil Nadu government had sought release of 20,000 cusecs of water per day.

During that time, senior lawyer Fali S Nariman, appearing for Karnataka before the Supreme Court, had consented to release 10,000 cusecs of water. But the chief minister and water resources minister are claiming that they were not aware of this. This is the best example of bad governance, he said.
