Rajya Sabha adjourned again over Women's Bill

Last Updated 09 March 2010, 06:07 IST

When the house assembled in the morning, chairman Hamid Ansari read out a condolence message on the Chilean earthquake and then announced question hour.

Kamal Akhtar of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and other MPs from his party as also the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) were immediately on their feet protesting against the women's reservation bill that promises to reserve 33 percent of legislative seats for women.

After failing to restore order, an exasperated Ansari said: "It seems the members don't want question hour to function. The chair has no option but to adjourn the House till 12 noon."

The bill was moved for consideration in the Rajya Sabha amid unruly scenes as a dozen members opposing it tore up the document and hurled them at chairman Hamid Ansari.
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned six times Monday. The voting, which was supposed to be held  at 6 p.m., had to be postponed after a handful of opposition members protested its passage. The voting is scheduled for Tuesday.
