Cameras in city to check signal jump

If you are someone who jumps signals when there are no traffic police around, think twice. The Bengaluru Traffic Police will launch the Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) cameras at 10 junctions to check traffic violations from Thursday.

Unlike enforcement cameras already installed at various junctions, RLVD cameras, besides capturing the image, also convert it into text format which will be automatically transferred to their server at the Traffic Management Centre (TMC). 

Lanes are marked digitally inside the RLVD cameras based on the “stop” line and the pedestrian crossing line on roads. The RLVD camera captures the image of the vehicle’s number plate soon after it jumps the signal or violates the red light.

The TMC staff will then analyse the image and the text format, generate a challan for the violation and send it to vehicle owners. The camera operates so fast that it generates the data of a vehicle the moment it touches these two lanes, said the police. 

“The RLVD cameras with Automatic Number Plate Reading (ANPR) facility will be used for the first time in the city to curb major violations like jumping traffic signals and lane indiscipline,’’ Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) R Hithendra told DH.

RLVD cameras have been fitted at five junctions in the central business district and five other junctions in other parts of the city. The facility would be extended to other junctions in the coming days. Mysuru was the first city in the state to have RLVD cameras from April.

The police chose the 10 junctions after a careful survey. These junctions are straight and wide and witness a lot of traffic violations.  “We want to convert these junctions into zero-tolerance and accident free zones. The facility helps the police trace blacklisted vehicles and other traffic offences,” Hithendra said.

The police have spent Rs 35 crore for introduction of RLVD cameras under B-Trac project.

Matrix Security and Surveillance Pvt Ltd has been assigned to instal cameras, print challans and maintain the facilities for five years.
