Preparations on for population census

State and district-level nodal officers have already been appointed. All the officials who will be part of the census have been given training.  One-day workshop for census officers was held in Kodagu. Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner K H Ashwathanarayana Gowda said “census is time bound programme like election. Officials should complete their duties without giving scope for loopholes.

District Nodal Officer M Srinivas and Master trainer G Gopal explained on the purpose of the census and other rules and regulations to be followed during census.  G Gopal said “census should not be neglected. For the implementation of any project census is essential. Census helps in prioritising the development of the country.”

The census process will be held in two phases. In the first phase between April -September, basic facilities, prepartions will be made. The door-to-door census will be held between February 8 and 28. The houses will be verified again between March 10.

History

The census began during the period of Chanakya. Census began in a systematic manner in 1872. From 1872 onwards, for every 10 years, census is being held. This is the 15th census in India.

This year, National Population Register will be maintained. Under the programme, even personal details will be collected. Moreover, photographs of all those all those who are above 15 years and thumb impression will be collected. In the first phase, house list will be prepared. In the second phase, census will be carried out. The first phase of collecting house lists will be done from April 15 to May 30.

Kodagu district has 261 villages except Madikeri, Somwarpet, Virajpet, Kushalnagar and Gonikoppa. The district has 974 census blocks. As many as 974 enumerators have been appointed along with 162 supervisors. 24 trainers will provide training to enumerators and supervisors.  The training is being held between March 8 and 20.
