President Pranab Mukherjee, Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and former minister P G R Sindhia addressed Pramoda Devi Wadiyar as the ‘Maharani’ during the inaugural ceremony of the 17th national jamboree of the Bharat Scouts and Guides at Adakanahalli, on KIADB Industrial Area on the Nanjangud road, 17 km from the city, on Thursday.

While the President described Wadiyar, the head of the erstwhile royal family, as ‘Maharani of Mysore’, the Governor said ‘Mysore ki Maharani’. Both Siddaramaiah and Sindhia, also state chief commissioner of Scouts and Guides, went a step ahead and said ‘Her Highness the Maharani of Mysore’.

All the dignitaries recalled the contributions of the Wadiyar kings in patroni-sing the Scouts and Guides in Karnataka.

“Boys Scout of Mysore was officially started under the patronage of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar in 1917, and hence the hosting of the jamboree in Mysuru during its centenary year is significant. While Nalwadi’s younger brother Kanteerava Narasimha Raja Wadiyar was the chief scout, the last maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, as a young prince, was the chief cub. When the Girl Guides of Mysore was started in 1927, Nalwadi’s mother Kempa Nanjammani, popular as Vani Vilasa Sannidhana, was the chief guide,” Sindhia said.

“In memory of the patron, the stage has been named Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar dais, while the venue has been named after late state chief commissioner V P Deendayal Naidu,” he said.
