The process has finally begun to upgrade 25 more roads in the heart of Bengaluru under TenderSURE guidelines.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has invited bids for total station surveys of these roads, including MG Road.

As part of the surveys, horizontal and vertical measurements of the roads’ topographical features will be taken using electronic equipment. Once these 25 roads are developed, the entire Central Business District (CBD) will be covered by a network of such streets.

The total length of the new roads to be upgraded in the CBD is 36.78 km. This includes 3.01 km of MG Road from Queen’s statue to Trinity Circle and up to ASC Centre. Also part of this project is 0.93 km of Commercial Street from
Kamaraj Road to Jumma Masjid Road near Bowring hospital.

TenderSURE roads were designed to redress issues linked to potholes, broken footpaths, overflowing drainage, poorly placed power transformers, the tangle of electrical wiring and telecom fixtures. The idea was to break the cycle of digging and repairing the same roads time and time again without actually enhancing the road quality.

The TenderSURE roads mandate the integration of networked services under the road – water, sewage, power, OFC, gas and stormwater drains. The priority is on pedestrians and cyclists while recognising the needs of street vendors and hawkers. The focus is also on street landscape and aesthetics.

The total station survey will also include collection of details for structures such as bridges, culverts, utilities, existing roads, electric and telephone installations, both overhead and underground. The dimensions of buildings, fencing and trees falling within the Right of Way (RoW) (road width from building to building) will be recorded.
St Mark’s Road and Vittal Mallya Hospital Road were the first two to be developed under TenderSURE in June 2015. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced that 50 more roads would be upgraded on the same lines.

Cunningham Road, Residency Road, Museum Road and Commissariat Road were subsequently developed in phases.
