Lydia Yeshpaul, who hurled acid and slashed her boyfriend Jayakumar's face with a scalpel in Vijayanagar, had initially convinced her parents that Jayakumar Purushottam would get converted to her religion and only then they will get married.

But over a period of time, Jayakumar refused to get converted and this had soured their relationship, sources from the police said.

When Jayakumar had asked Lydia to get converted into his religion, she refused outright and then Jayakumar started avoiding Lydia. His parents also started looking for a prospective bride for him, sources added.

Lydia on Monday night procured acid and a scalpel from the hospital where she worked, came to Pipeline Road in Vijayanagar where Jayakumar was returning from work and waited for him.

When Jayakumar arrived, she accosted him and not only hurled acid at him, but also slashed his face with the scalpel.

Lydia has been arrested and booked for attempt to murder. She was produced before a magistrate who remanded her in judicial custody.
