A Sri Lankan journalist was abducted and brutally beaten up by unidentified attackers near capital Colombo. Poddala Jayantha, secretary of the Sri Lanka Working Journalists’ Association, was abducted near his home by a group of men on Monday evening and severely attacked with sticks.
The assailants later dumped him near the IDH hospital in a suburb of Colombo.
The scribe was hospitalised after some youth saw him near a marshy land and brought him to the accident ward of the Government National hospital.
According to a media report, the police have questioned two senior journalists over the abduction on Jayantha. It said both journalists were produced before the court on Tuesday and later released on bail.
Condemning the attack, Lankan government ordered an investigation. Minister of Media Lakshman Yapa Abewardana said: “I vehemently and unequivocally condemn the attack on Jayantha.” Abewardana said the police have been directed to conduct an investigation to arrest those responsible for this “act of brutality”.
