A police constable returning home from duty, spent the whole night in a 30-foot deep well after falling into it in his attempt to escape attack by three men, at Bennali village of Belagavi taluk.

Raju Kerimani (26), a constable attached to Kakati police station, was returning home from duty on Tuesday night, when he saw a woman being molested in a car. He chased the car, intercepted the vehicle, and clicked the photo of its driver on his mobile phone. Soon, two more men in the car brandished a knife and in his bid to avoid being attacked, Kerimani started running. In the darkness, he failed to notice the well in a farm land and fell into it. He fractured his left leg and spent the night in the well.

On Wednesday morning, the owner of the land found Raju in the well. He alerted the police, who later rescued Kerimani. The well had only four-five feet of water and Kerimani held on to a rope to save himself from drowning. Kakati police have registered a case.
