The Union Public Service Commission on Thursday decided to defer the decision on Karnataka Administrative Service officers’ promotion to IAS and wait for legal opinion in the wake of pending court cases against them.

“With the UPSC receiving a number of pleas seeking to defer the decision till the court delivers its judgement on petitions questioning the selection of gazetted probationary officers in 1998, 1999, 2004 , the Commission has decided to refer the matter to legal department and seek its opinion.

The matter will be kept pending till then,” sources told DH. The Karnataka government had recommended 56 KAS officers for promotion to IAS. A total of 729 officers have been selected in 1998, 1999 and 2004 of whom 484 face charges of indulging in malpractices during their selection.
