SC grants parole to Kolkata businessman

The Supreme Court on Thursday granted parole to Kolkata businessman Paras Mal Lodha, arrested in cases relating to conversion of demonetised currency notes, to perform last rites of his mother, who died on March 7.

A three-judge bench presided over by Chief Justice J S Khehar granted concession to Lodha, who was on train and being taken to Chennai from New Delhi. He was granted parole from March 9 till March 28.

“Keeping in view the urgency of the matter, we consider it just and appropriate to direct the release of the petitioner, on parole, from 09.03.2017, when the train, in which he is travelling, reaches Nagpur,” the bench, also comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and Sanjay Kishan Kaul, said.During the period of his release, the court directed that Lodha would be accompanied 24x7, by police officers in the CBI cadre not below the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police.
