A construction worker was hacked to death by his co-workers for excessive use of water while playing Holi in Subramanyapura on Sunday evening.

The deceased, Biswajith Dutta (27), hailed from West Bengal. He had been residing at a makeshift shed at a construction project taken up by Iskcon in  Subramanyapura. The police have detained nine people in connection with the murder.

A large number of construction workers from West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar have been employed for the project. They reside in makeshift sheds at the construction site.  A big tank has been built at the site to store water for daily use, said the police.

Dutta, who began playing Holi on Sunday afternoon, would often go near the tank and use the water. The co-workers citing scarcity of water at the site warned him not to use too much water. However, Dutta ignored them and told them to mind their business, said the
police.

The suspects lost their cool as Dutta kept wasting water till evening. They picked a fight with him and he retaliated. One of them hit his head with a log repeatedly.

A profusely bleeding Dutta was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival, said the police.
