Police at checkposts seize silver, thanksgiving letters to LPG users

The district administration, which is managing the bypolls in Nanjangud (reserved) Assembly constituency scheduled for April 9, has seized 68 silver gift articles, Rs 1 lakh in cash and live chicken in various raids conducted from 6 pm to 10 pm on Monday. The raids were led by Deputy Commissioner D Randeep, Superintendent of Police Ravi D Channannavar and Election Officer G Jagadeesha.

The SP said thanksgiving letters by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to LPG users, who have given up subsidy, were also recovered during the raids and cases have been registered in this connection. The silver items were found when the SP intercepted a motorbike rider entering Nanjangud town from Mysuru at Katwadi checkpost. Nanjangud Rural Police registered a case.

When a car was intercepted at Kowlande checkpost, the driver was found in possession of Rs 1 lakh in cash. Since the driver did not furnish any documents for the amount, police seized the money. At the same check ost, live chicken were recovered from an SUV.

Following raids on liquor shops and bars in and around Nanjangud, cases have been filed against five shops and five persons on Monday. A case has been filed against a person for consuming liquor in a public place. In another incident, 540 ml of IMFL has been seized, Assistant Commissioner Jagadish Nayak said.

As a precautionary measure, all vehicles bound for Nanjangud and those leaving the taluk are subject to checking. Even government vehicles are subject to checking, Jagadeesha said.

36 excise cases
According to a press note from the Deputy Commissioner for Excise, 21 persons have been arrested following filing of 36 cases which involved seizure of 85.260 litres of IMFL, seizure of three vehicles and suspension of two shops from 122 raids conducted between March 9 and March 27.
